Functional Skills

When teaching you will be able to get help and support from your organisation and colleagues as well as using your wits to come up with exciting ideas. In the mean time and for your essays it can be a bit daunting until you get the hang of it. One of the most common specialisms people ask about is sports. So I’ve brainstormed three quick ideas that might get you started in sport or any other subject.

Organising a (fictional or real) tournament. Writing to potential venues is literacy and creating a budget is numeracy. Doing those on the computer, using Word or Excel would also tick off ICT. To cover that explicitly you could produce publicity materials such as posters.

Diet and exercise. Doing research in to diet and exercise could be literacy or ICT. Presenting that information as a leaflet or talk/presentation also counts for both literacy and ICT. Calculating calories using a spreadsheet would be numeracy and ICT as well.

Matches. This would need a little adapting to the particular sport in question. Analysis of a match like on TV football, aspects like fouls, possession, scoring, timings and so on. Compiling those as statistics is numeracy, writing up match reports is literacy and presenting those reports in a newspaper or newsletter style is ICT.
